Scholarship Info
Each sending period, the Greater Chicago Area Team can award scholarship(s) to financially needy students. These scholarships can range from a few hundred to one thousand dollars, depending on the need and monies available. To qualify, students must have already been selected into the AFS program and have completed the financial aid process through the AFS national office.
The local Chicago scholarship committee will then review qualified candidates to determine local awards. Letters will then be sent to students and families notifying them of their eligibility to apply for local area funds. Scholarship students are expected to provide a short summary of their experience at the end of their AFS experience and are encouraged to remain active upon return with AFS volunteer opportunities.
Here's what last year's recipients have to say about their AFS experience.

"My time in New Zealand was one of tremendous growth. I did not know what to expect before I left and was unsure if I even wanted to go beforehand and miss the entire summer. However, I can now say, after having gone through the journey, I would not change the experience for anything. It was truly life changing. Looking back and thinking about if I had never gone makes me relize how grateful I am for the scholarship I recieved from our local AFS chapter. While I worked to find sponsors, the scholarship was essential in getting me to New Zealand and I am thankful that the chapter was so gracious. AFS is a great organization run on volunteers and local chapters working hard to make sure any person of any means can experience the great things that I experienced. I am happy to know that an organization like this exists and am happy to become a part of the AFS family." |
