AFS Intercultural Programs

AFS is an international non-profit organization that provides intercultural learning opportunities to help people develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world. Specifically, AFS offers programs that give hundreds of American high school students the opportunity to live and study in a foreign country. The organization also provides hundreds of American families the opportunity to host a student or teacher from another country. Community service programs are available for those who are 18 and older.

AFS Greater Chicago Area

We are one of 10 geographic areas within the AFS-USA Great Lakes region. The Greater Chicago area itself is composed of 10 chapters that encompass an area extending from Lansing to Waukegan and west to the Fox River. AFS Chicago volunteers facilitate the hosting of approximately 60 international students and teachers and the sending abroad of about that same number of local area students. If you would like to get involved, please contact us.

AFS Greater Chicago Website

This site, designed and maintained by AFS volunteers, is to be used as a resource for Chicago area AFS students and host families, families interested in hosting, returnees and students who are considering an AFS study abroad or summer program.

Site maps show where, in the Chicago area, current AFS foreign students are living, as well as where Chicago area American students are located abroad with AFS. Families, students and volunteers can access the website calendar for important dates (date of arrival/departure, orientations, etc.) and upcoming events.

The slides shows are pictures from real hosting experiences. Click on maps, pictures or the calendar to drill down for more information or to view information in a different format. Send pictures of your own experience with AFS, and we will post them for you! Questions and comments are also welcome.

For 60 years, AFS Intercultural Programs has been leading international high school student exchange. AFS was founded by volunteer American Field Service ambulance drivers from World Wars I and II who believed — as AFS believes today — that the way to build a more just and peaceful world begins when people from different countries meet, learn about each other, and begin to understand each other. AFS is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and is largely a volunteer-driven organization, with more than 5,500 U.S. volunteers and 30,000 worldwide.
